Individually, and together - because both matter.

On your own

None of this requires you to become an expert overnight. A few things genuinely help.

Use the tools, and keep hold of your own judgement. A good AI tool is a magnificent servant and a poor master. The difference is whether you are still the one giving the instructions.

Build your people before you need them. The market will eventually tell almost everyone that it has no use for them this season. What holds you up on that day is rarely your job title. It is the people who were already on your side.

Notice where you are tempted to look away, or to panic. Both are understandable. Neither prepares you for anything. The useful place to stand is somewhere calmer than either.

Keep learning the foundations, not just the current tools. Tools date quickly. Understanding how a field actually works underneath them does not, and it tends to become valuable again just when everyone assumes it has been made redundant.

Together - the harder, larger decision

Private kindness is the finest thing a person can do, and it is not enough on its own. Love that helps the one neighbour it happens to meet, while ten thousand more are about to fall, has misunderstood the size of what is coming. At a large enough scale, love has to become something we are usually a little embarrassed to call by its real name: policy. A society deciding that no one falls below a certain floor, that contribution is honoured and that worth does not depend on it, is the same decision as private love, made at the scale of millions of strangers who will never meet.

That is the case, in short, for three things I would ask you to understand and, if you agree, to support.

Not a basement to survive on, but a floor to live on with dignity. Evidence from existing trials suggests people do not stop contributing when it arrives - they stop doing the work that diminishes them, and start doing the work that matters.

A broad, low levy on transactions of value, rather than the tangle of nearly ninety separate taxes Britain currently runs. Essentials would carry no charge.

Real education

A genuine second chance at education

A year - free, without exams or debt - to work out who you actually are, before the world starts asking what you are for.

Policy, in the end, is love with the arithmetic done. It is what love looks like once it stops being a feeling in one heart, and becomes an arrangement between people who will never meet.
